Our Roots: Sunde history
Sunde Land Surveying, Inc was started September 1975 by Edward Sunde, PLS. Ed started with a staff of three people in a small space in Bloomington, MN. Throughout the years, he added more employees, office space and equipment to service the growing list of clients. He enlisted John Barnes, PLS as his office manager. John Barnes, PLS started at Sunde Land Surveying, Inc in May 1976 after going to Hennepin Technical College for Land Surveying/Civil Technology and serving in the United States Navy.
Ed used the field expertise of Mark Hanson, PLS as his Field Supervisor. Mark managed the field crews and equipment to keep the field crews up and running smoothly. Mark attended Normandale Community College and has taken various boundary law and land surveying classes at Dunwoody Institute. Scott Soukup, PLS started as a computer draftsman in July 1976 with Sunde Land Surveying. Scott moved up over the years to become a key component of office operations and office manager. He attended Hennepin Technical College for Civil Technology and also has taken Surveying and AutoCAD classes at Dunwoody Institute and St. Paul Technical College.
In December 1998, Ed sold Sunde Land Surveying, Inc to John Barnes, Mark Hanson, and Scott Soukup. On January 1, 1999, Sunde Land Surveying, LLC was created. Ed retired later that year after over 20 years of being in business. Since 1999, Sunde Land Surveying, LLC has grown to over 25 employees. Sunde Land Surveying, LLC continues to be one of the premier land surveying companies in the state of Minnesota.
As of January 1st, 2008, John K. Barnes, PLS retired from Sunde Land Surveying after over 30 years of service. Arlee J. Carlson, PLS, CFedS and Lenny F. Carlson, PLS were added as Principals and are now assisting in the everyday operations of Sunde Land Surveying.
In 2009, the Principals of Sunde Land Surveying have added to our client base by obtaining Professional Land Surveying licenses in South Dakota and North Dakota.
Arlee Carlson has obtained the title Certified Federal Land Surveyor (CFedS) Certified by the United States Department of the Interior Bureau of Land Management to perform and prepare boundary surveys within Federal Trust Land (Indian Reservations) and Bureau of Land Management property.
In 2012, Sunde Land Surveying opened an office in Mandan, ND to better serve our North Dakota clients and maximize our efficiency.
In 2013, Sunde Land Surveying purchased a majority of the electronic files and survey records of Midwest Land Surveying. John Dickey, previously an employee of Midwest Land Surveying, joined our team at Sunde.
In December of 2018 Mark Hanson retired after a 44 year career with our firm.
